Re the World Vision gifts... I'd mostly be happy about it, if someone did that - especially if it was an alternative to the "small crap" gifts you often wind up getting from random relations, or at work or whatever. I do still like a few shiny things to unwrap for myself as well, though, so if I were going to do something like that for someone, I'd do the charity donation, and then still get them at least some sweets or something.
That said, some of the charity options are more... well, more exciting than others. If I were doing it for a gift for someone, I'd rather say "Merry Christmas, you've donated 200 tree seedlings to this village", or "you've donated three books to this African village's library", as opposed to, say, deworming tablets (necessary though they are).
